Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent is just 10 days away. Ash Wednesday, February 17th, begins this Holy Season as a time of preparation to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, nor is the receiving of ashes mandatory. However, as is the custom, many people come to church on Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of this Season by receiving ashes on their forehead as a sign of repentance. Once again, the COVID pandemic is altering this custom. This year, ashes will not be signed on the forehead. Rather they will be sprinkled on the individuals head. This is to avoid contact. This means of distributing the ashes is legitimate and the Holy Father has suggested that this is how it should be done this year.
